Your First Powerlifting Coaching Session: What to Expect and How to Prepare

December 29, 2022 By Dave DePew Leave a Comment

Here is an overview of some of the things you should expect during your first session:

  1. An assessment of your current strength and technique: Your coach will likely begin the session by assessing your current strength levels and technique for the three main powerlifting lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. This may involve testing your one-rep max for each lift or having you perform a few reps at a lighter weight to observe your form. The purpose of this assessment is to get a baseline for your current strength and technique and to identify any areas that may need improvement.
  2. A discussion of your goals and training program: Your coach will likely ask you about your goals for powerlifting and your current training program. This is an opportunity for you to share your specific goals, such as increasing your one-rep max or competing in a powerlifting meet, as well as any previous training experience you have. Your coach will use this information to tailor the session to your needs and help you develop a plan to reach your goals.
  3. Instruction on proper form and technique: Depending on the results of the assessment, your coach may spend part of the session working with you on proper form and technique for the three main lifts. This may involve demonstrating the correct form and having you practice with a light weight or using training aids, such as bands or chains, to help improve your technique.
  4. A workout or training session: After discussing your goals and working on form and technique, your coach will likely lead you through a workout or training session. This could include a variety of exercises, such as accessory lifts, drills, and plyometrics, designed to help you build strength and improve your powerlifting performance.
  5. Homework or a plan for future sessions: At the end of the session, your coach may provide you with some homework or a plan for future training sessions. This may include specific exercises or drills to focus on, as well as any other recommendations for improving your powerlifting performance.

Overall, you should expect your first powerlifting coaching session to be focused on assessing your current strength and technique, discussing your goals and training program, and working with your coach to develop a plan to help you reach your powerlifting goals. With the right coach and training plan, you can make significant progress toward becoming a stronger and more skilled powerlifter.
