Selecting Proper Lifting Shoes for Powerlifting

February 14, 2023 By Dave DePew Leave a Comment

Selecting the proper lifting shoes for powerlifting is important to maximize performance and reduce the risk of injury. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing lifting shoes:

  1. Sole type: Lifting shoes should have a hard, flat sole that provides stability and grip. The sole should not compress under heavy loads, as this can affect balance and stability. Most lifting shoes have a flat, non-compressible sole made of rubber, TPU or a combination of both.
  2. Heel height: The heel height is an important consideration when selecting lifting shoes. The heel should be raised slightly to allow for better ankle mobility and more efficient squatting and form. The optimal heel height for the squat is generally between 0.5 and 1.5 inches. However, when performing deadlifts a flat shoe is usually preferred.
  3. Fit: Proper fit is essential for any lifting shoe. The shoe should fit snugly and securely, with no slippage or movement within the shoe. It’s important to try on multiple sizes and styles to find the best fit. It is also good to have a wide toe box to best spread the toes for rooting the floor.
  4. Durability: Lifting shoes should be durable enough to withstand the demands of heavy lifting. Look for shoes with high-quality materials and construction that can handle regular use and wear. Best if you only wear your lifting shoes in the gym and not on the street.
  5. Style: While this is not the most important factor, style can be a consideration for some lifters. Powerlifting shoes are available in a range of styles and colors, so it’s possible to find a pair that fits your personal style and preferences. If you look good, you feel good!

By considering these factors, lifters can choose lifting shoes that provide the stability, support, and comfort necessary for optimal performance in powerlifting.
