Exploring the concept of “belief” as it relates to achieving goals.
Question #1 in this Exploration:
1. What does “belief” mean to you in the context of goal accomplishment? How would you define it?
Belief is the construct of our values working in alignment with our intentions. These beliefs are greatly influenced by our experiences, upbringing, culture, and both our intellectual and emotional reasoning processes.
It is important to recognize that beliefs are largely shaped by universal values and our personal core values but this is a complex interplay of external influences and internal cognitive processes. We may have placed a less continuous role in how our beliefs were formed but we have the ability to play a more conscious role in how they are maintained.
This conscious involvement can involve critical thinking, self-reflection, exposure to diverse perspectives, and a willingness to reconsider and adapt our beliefs as we learn and grow.
Engaging in critical thinking encourages us to assess information objectively, examining evidence and reasoning behind our beliefs. Self-reflection enables us to introspect and evaluate the origins and validity of our beliefs. Exposure to diverse perspectives broadens our understanding and challenges ingrained viewpoints. And importantly, having the willingness to reconsider and adapt our beliefs leads to unimaginable growth, allowing us to evolve and embrace new insights and understandings that align more closely with our most fundamental values and experiences.
