- GOAL SETTING: The first step is to start by setting realistic and attainable goals. These goals must be specific and align with a healthy lifestyle.
- EDUCATION: Expand your nutrition knowledge: Learn the food groups, and learn about macros (Carbs, Protein, Fats). Discover the benefits that different nutrients provide and how the best choices will empower you to make informed decisions. Explore reputable sources, consult an expert, or join a community focused on health-centered nutrition.
- PREPARATION: Create a plan to work from. Take the time to plan your meals mindfully in concert with your current lifestyle. Designing each meal with a focus on balance. Experiment with new foods, spices, and seasoning to keep your meals likable.
- PROGRESSIVE & FLEXIBLE: Embracing progressiveness over a perfectionistic mindset. Remain flexible with the process as you gain experience. Remove guilt from your decision-making in order to allow for individual growth. Encourage an attitude of adaptability and self-acceptance.
- ADD IN FRUITS & VEGETABLES: Aim to gradually increase the portions of fruits and veggies you have each day. Expand your experience with these foods. Explore additional cooking methods to discover your preferences.
- REPLACE & SWAP: This is the progressive process of substituting an unhealthy item with a healthier option. An awareness of the ingredients or composition of the food or meal will help provide the best nutritional alternatives. This will mostly be about replacing processed foods with whole foods, foods without added sugar, and foods from sustainable sources.
- HYDRATION: Maintaining optimal hydration is essential to our overall health and wellness. We want to create the habit of drinking water at all times of the day. Place water in areas you frequent. Create signs or notes to remind you to drink water. Make it a habit to carry water with you to serve as a reminder.
- SATIETY: Strive to practice mindful eating, adopting the habits that enhance your healthy relationship with food. The mindful eating approach will help you recognize when you’re satisfied and reduce the risk of overeating.
- SELF-TALK: Be increasingly more aware of the conversations you have with yourself and how it influences your nutritional choices and your energy towards those choices. Learn to identify talk that is sabotaging. Recognize the internal arguments and resistance you might have to these changes.
- SUPPORT & MENTORSHIP: Having a support system will help you to feel that you’re not going it alone. It’s a good feeling to share your success with someone and to feel encouragement along the way. You will want to share your experiences with others; some on the journey with you and some who are cheering you along from the sideline. A mentor or coach will help you in all these ways and help with managing your expectations.
- PATIENT AND SELF-KINDNESS: Embracing the idea that this is a gradual process full of many successes and setbacks. We want to show ourselves compassion and forgiveness. We will at times deviate from our plan or indulge in those unhealthy choices. This doesn’t mean that we are failing. We should be open to the opportunity to examine the situation and circumstance that brought about this choice. Without dwelling on the choice we begin again to refocus and recommit to the process of reconstructing ourselves into what we want from our body.
This is your personal journey. No other journey is exactly like yours because nobody else is exactly like you.
