The Car Deadlift is a popular and visually impressive event in Strongman competitions, where competitors lift a car using a specialized steel frame placed under the tires. This event not only tests raw lifting power but also the ability to handle awkward and heavy loads repeatedly within a short time frame.
Event Description
In the Car Deadlift, a steel frame is placed under the car’s tires, and competitors lift the car by pulling on handles attached to the frame. These handles can be either to the sides or the front of the athlete, similar to a standard deadlift or a trap bar deadlift. The specifications of the Car Deadlift Frame are not standardized, leading to variations in the equipment used in different competitions.
Rules and Execution
- Objective: Lift the car for as many repetitions as possible within the time limit.
- Time Limit: 60 seconds.
- Regripping: Allowed, giving competitors the chance to adjust their grip between repetitions.
- Stance: Only the conventional stance is allowed.
- Hitching: Permitted, allowing competitors to use their legs and body to help complete the lift.
Execution:
- Starting Position: The athlete stands with feet hip-width apart, grasping the handles of the frame. Handles may be positioned to the sides or in front of the athlete.
- Lift: The athlete must lift the bar attached to the vehicle to a standing position with head up, shoulders back, and legs and feet in line. The wheels of the vehicle must touch the floor before the athlete may proceed to the next repetition.
- Lockout: At the top of the lift, the athlete must show full control with an upright posture and await the judge’s signal.
- Descent: The bar must be returned to the floor under control. Dropping the bar is not allowed.
Good Lift Criteria:
- The lift is counted as successful if the athlete reaches a standing position with head up, shoulders back, and legs and feet in line.
- The athlete must wait for the judge’s signal before lowering the bar.
Prohibited Practices:
- The use of tacky or similar products is not allowed.
- Lifting hooks or non-standard lifting straps are prohibited.
- Vaseline, baby oil, or similar products cannot be used on the legs to reduce friction. Baby powder or water may be used, but the athlete must clean the bar after their attempt.
Allowed Equipment:
- Belt for core support
- Chalk to improve grip
- Knee wraps or sleeves
- Lifting straps
- Single-ply support suit
Scoring and Variations
- Maximum Repetitions: The primary goal is to perform as many repetitions as possible within the 60-second time limit. Each repetition is counted if performed according to the rules.
- Good Lift Signals: Judges will signal when a lift is good, and the competitor must lower the car back to the ground under control.
The Car Deadlift is a true test of strength and endurance, demanding that competitors lift a substantial load repeatedly while maintaining proper form and control. This event not only demonstrates the competitors’ physical capabilities but also their mental toughness and ability to perform under pressure.
