Strongman keeps growing here in San Diego, and that’s good news if you’ve ever thought about competing. More events means more chances to get on the platform, build real experience, and plug into a strength community that actually wants you there. The local scene is built to take athletes at every level, from the person stepping on the platform for the first time to the seasoned competitor prepping for something bigger. And the point was never just to perform on the day. It’s to keep progressing.
Novice and Beginner Contests
If you’re new, this is where you start, and I’d tell anyone to start here. Novice divisions are about learning how a contest actually runs: how to manage your pacing, how to stay composed under load, how the day flows from event to event. The focus is on participation, safety, and experience, so you can compete without years of prep behind you. Your first contest isn’t a test you pass or fail. It’s a learning rep. Treat it like one and you’ll come back better.
Open Divisions
Open is where experienced athletes go to challenge themselves against a deeper field. This is the pathway for real competitive growth, the place where your experience starts shaping your strategy and your execution, not just your numbers. Once you’ve got a few contests under your belt, this is where you find out what you’re actually made of.
Weight-Class Competitions
Most contests are organized by weight class, and that’s there to keep it fair. You’re competing against people around your own bodyweight, which makes the results mean something and the strategy real. Every size gets to compete meaningfully, chasing strength relative to their own class instead of just raw load. Once weight class is in play, planning becomes part of the performance.
Specialty Events and Themed Competitions
A lot of local contests run unique formats, and I love that about this sport. Themed events, specialty contests, creative implement variations, they keep things fresh and challenge you in ways the standard lineup won’t. They also keep it fun, which is a bigger deal than people admit. Variety is part of how strongman keeps growing and keeps people coming back.
Qualifiers for Regional and National Contests
Some local contests are stepping stones. Place well and you can qualify for regional or national events, which opens up bigger opportunities and a higher level of competition. But qualifying is only part of it. These events are where you test yourself, build relationships, and reinforce the strength culture we’re building right here at home. The whole environment is set up to support you wherever you are in it.
As the sport keeps growing, there are more and more chances to get on the platform, learn by doing, and progress inside a community that’s pulling for you. If you’ve been thinking about it, that’s your sign.
