In this Q&A, Dave addresses a common question about the professional status of powerlifters. He sheds light on the financial realities of the sport and how some athletes navigate their way to financial success through entrepreneurial ventures and personal branding.
Question:
Is there such a thing as a professional powerlifter?
Answer:
No, would be the simple answer. This is because there just isn’t an income that results directly from the elite-level status as a powerlifter, at least not in the traditional sense. Powerlifting is primarily a hobby, even for those competing at the elite level. Most athletes cover their own expenses and while the best each year may have an opportunity to win prize money, it’s usually not enough to fully support their livelihood.
That being said, some powerlifters can leverage their success and visibility in the sport to create opportunities that generate one or more income streams. For example, they might become strength coaches, start a gym, become a meet director, create programs and/or products. Of course, being successful in any one or more of those ventures requires more than the titles and accomplishments that come from being an elite-level powerlifter. While it may be possible to earn a living related to powerlifting, these athletes are successful financially because they can more accurately be described as entrepreneurs or influencers rather than professional athletes.
