Biceps Femoris

Movement:

  • Extension of the hip (Long Head)
    • Moving the thigh backward
  • Lateral rotation of the knee (when the knee is flexed)
    • Rotating the lower leg outward

Attachment:

  • Origin:
    • Long Head: Ischial tuberosity
    • Short Head: Linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line of the femur
  • Insertion:
    • Head of the fibula

Semitendinosus

Movement:

  • Flexion of the knee
    • Bending the leg
  • Extension of the hip
    • Moving the thigh backward
  • Medial rotation of the knee (when the knee is flexed)
    • Rotating the lower leg inward

Attachment:

  • Origin:
    • Ischial tuberosity
  • Insertion:
    • Medial surface of the proximal tibia (pes anserinus)

Semimembranosus

Movement:

  • Flexion of the knee
    • Bending the leg
  • Extension of the hip
    • Moving the thigh backward
  • Medial rotation of the knee (when the knee is flexed)
    • Rotating the lower leg inward

Attachment:

  • Origin:
    • Ischial tuberosity
  • Insertion:
    • Posterior surface of the medial condyle of the tibia
